Russia’s Position in the Global Stage and Prospect of Relations with Indonesia

In order to get the recognition of World Class University, the Department of International Relations, Diponegoro University held an International Webinar 2020 with the theme of “Russia’s Position In The Global Stage And Prospect Of Relations With Indonesia” on Monday, November 23rd, 2020. This theme was also taken in commemoration of 70th anniversary of Indonesia-Russia diplomatic relations. This event presented HE Lyudmila Georgievna Vorobieva (Russian Ambassador to Indonesia) and Vitaly Aleksandrovich Glinkin (Director of the Russian Cultural Center) as the speakers, while the responders were Marten Hanura, MPS (Secretary of the International Relations Study Program).

The Chancellor of Diponegoro University is represented by Prof. Budi Setiyono, Ph.D who opened the event, said that Russia have the possibilities to collaborate with Indonesia, which is a rising power country in Asia. Especially with UNDIP, as one of the big universities in Indonesia which is able to develop cooperation in the fields of teaching, research and student exchange.

Marten Hanura, MPS, the Secretary of the International Relations Program said that Russia is one of the countries that has many roles in the global stage both in international organizations such as the United Nations, WTO, APEC, G8 and regional organizations as well as has a huge role in handling Covid 19. Marten asked the guest speaker whether Russia wanted to restore domination as a super power like it was before in 1990 and what are the impacts for Indonesia.

HE Lyudmila Georgievna Vorobieva (Russian Ambassador to Indonesia) said that in foreign policy, it does not pursue a super power because this kind of concept makes a dominant country in the whole world, but Russia, in foreign policy, fully supports multilateralism that every country have the equal position and they have the right to respect their national interests. Russia also developed inclusive security that the security of a country is not determined by other countries. Meanwhile, Indonesia itslef is very important for Russia as a key partner not only in Southeast Asia but also in Asia Pacific because Indonesia has considerable influence in the region.

Vitaly Aleksandrovich Glinkin (Director of the Russian Cultural Center) said that the Russian Cultural Center as one of the Russian institutions in Indonesia has a mission for cooperation in the fields of humanity, research, education and culture with the Indonesian government which aims to understand each other better between the two countries in order to increase further cooperation. many more in various fields.

The event also featured cultural performances by Indonesian Students in Russia (Permira) in collaboration with Russian students by singing ‘Rayuan Pulau Kelapa’ which was also translated into Russian ‘Ostrova Palm’ and Russian poetry performance.
